The most overlooked difference between mid-drive and hub motors appears when something fails. The assist of a mid-drive must pass through the chain, chainring, and rear derailleur, so power output depends entirely on that drivetrain.
If the chain breaks or drops, the mid-drive loses its only path for power. The motor still spins but drives nothing, and the bike can only be moved by human legs. The "electric assist" drops to zero in an instant.

A mid-drive fleet should therefore carry a spare link or quick tool and train riders to recognize the exact moment assist disappears, because the bike becomes pedal-only without warning and a tired rider may be stranded on a hill. Matching the motor type to the duty cycle is a real operational decision, not just a spec sheet choice.
For dealers and fleet operators, this means mid-drive models need stricter chain care and a roadside plan. For buyers, the broken-chain risk should enter the total cost of ownership and the support package.
